Chap. 20 k: Maintain/Display Activity

The Display Activity command will bring up a display window for each line on your system. This display will show activity as it occurs on each of your lines. Within each display are two menus, Display and Log, which are described below.

The Display menu contains two commands, Clear and Options. The Clear command will clear the current display screen. The Options command will bring up the Display Message Options screen, which will allow you to select the events you wish to have displayed. By default all messages are displayed, but you can select individual event types from the Types of Messages list to be displayed and logged.

The Log menu also contains two commands, Clear and Options. The Clear command will clear the current log file (a text file which saves all events as they are displayed if Log Messages is checked). The Options command brings up the Log File Options window, which allows you to log events to a file, and also set the name of the text file to which the events will be logged.

To view background operations such as auto forwarding, fax queues, and privilege billing activity, look in Line 1 display. All background information goes into the Line 1 display and log.

You would typically only check Log Messages for troubleshooting purposes. The Display Activity window and/or log can be helpful if you want to see the name of a file that is being played, or if you ever hear, "no message recorded". The Activity Display and log will tell you the file name the program is unable to locate.

It is not necessary to set all lines to log activity unless you have a reason to do so. These log files will re-set when they reach 500k. It IS a good idea, though, to run the global logs. IN the stplus.ini, set maxgloballogs=5. Those logs will log all system activity in one large global log text file. When set to 5, it will write a maximum of 5 logs - each to a maximum size of 10 megabytes, then being again at global log 1. That way, if something unusual happens, you will probably have a log of it. You can adjust the number of log files you want depending upon the activity on your system. If you have a 4 line system, you will have less activity and 5 logs could be several days worth of activity. However, when running 48 lines and above, those 5 logs will get filled up pretty fast.

Note: For system logging set LOG= parameter to YES in the STPLUS.INI file. That will send all activity to a .dbf file. Each night at midnight the system will copy the file to the \stplus\log\backup subdirectory and rename them to today's date.
